Another funny Josh story

Joshua is such a funny kid. I think what makes it even funnier is that he hasn't a clue how funny some of the things he says come out.

At the end of speech today, his therapist wanted to quickly get him to try something. She's been working each week to get him to name items in a category in one minute, but he just seems to not understand what she means.

So, today's topic was food - his greatest motivator according to the psych. LOL This should have been a cinch for Josh, but he just stood there. After several times of rephrasing the question, he named Cheerios and pretzels. The rest of the conversation:

Therapist - "What do you like to eat for breakfast?"
Joshua - "Cereal".
Therapist - "How about for lunch?"
Joshua - "Sandwich".
Therapist - "What about dinner? What do you eat then?"
Joshua, with a serious frown - "Yucky stuff". LOL

(laughter from both the therapist and me)

Therapist - "Well, what is something that Mommy makes that you like to eat?"
Joshua - "TV Dinners".

I had no idea my cooking was that bad! ROFL

Melissa,
I have been reading your blog and was curious about how and why Josh was diagnosed with autism rather than a mixed expressive/receptive language delay. He sounds like a very wonderful little boy.
Thank you,
Mary Beth

Hi Mary Beth. :) Last January, Joshua went through a series of 7 tests. His official diagnosis is mild, high-functioning autism. When we were given the diagnosis, we were also told that because of his speech delay he did not qualify for the diagnosis of Aspergers.

Josh has many of the autism signs/symptoms. He frequently does not make eye contact, though he has improved quite a bit with the help of socialization classes and consistant reminders. He also has multiple sensory issues. He does sustained odd play with toys, spins things, many times appears deaf, uses echolalia, repetitive behaviors are common for him....he also needs consistancy and major preparation for change in routine. And this is just some of the symptoms that he has....the list goes on and on.

Because of all of his combined problems, specifically in the area of social skills (“deficits in social reciprocity.”) and communication, the diagnosis was Autism with the degree of difficulties being mild.

I hope that maybe clears up the reason behind the diagnosis. I may have shortened the entire thing a little too much to make it clear. LOL If you have any other questions, you can feel free to post or email me and I am always happy to share more. :) cpkmelissa at gmail dot com Thanks!
