We have Reading!

Joshua is now reading. I could hardly believe it when I took out a book today and he was able to read some of the pages. He has come so far this year, and if he goes no further, I will be satisfied. However, I have no doubt he will continue to progress further than I can imagine. He was so proud of his new accomplishment, and we quickly called Daddy at work to let him know. :)

Awesome Joshua! That is such great news!

What books are you using?

Right now I have been doing my own thing to get those first easy words. The book he read was a "Dick and Jane" book...very repetitive and short words. We have several of those step by step reader type things that we will go to next. Its hard to tell with Josh if he has books memorized or is actually reading, but since this was brand new to him, I know he was really and truly sounding those words out first and then remembering them. :)

Hi, I found your blog while looking for other parents with autistic children. This is really wonderful news! How old is he? And how does he like math?

Hi Amanda! Thanks for stopping by. :) Sorry for the delay in replying. Josh turned 6 this past October. He enjoys math, but he still relies on a lot of visual cues.

We are fairly certain my oldest son, Jacob, is on the spectrum (probably Aspergers), and he LOVES to do math. He will add and subtract in hi head and the majority of the time will get the correct answers, but he is unable to tell me how he came to that conclusion. LOL

Thank you for your answer. Yes, this sounds familiar. My son, who's still in kindergarten, does 2nd grade math. He can't explain how either. :)
